What to Expect

For your first visit you will need to allow 1 hour and 30 minutes. During that appointment we will have an in-depth conversation about your health history, current concerns, any tests or lab results you've brought, the function of all the systems of your body, diet, lifestyle habits, stress, and emotional factors contributing to your health concerns. I will feel your pulse and look at your tongue which are important diagnostic tools in Traditional Chinese Medicine. I will recheck each of those every time you come in.

After a thorough discussion we typically proceed into your first acupuncture treatment. Treatments are done lying on a massage table unless the patient is unable. Depending on the condition you are coming in for you may only need to remove your socks and shoes or you may need to undress to your underwear and lie between sheets. I suggest wearing comfortable loose clothing that can be moved easily for your first treatment. Using clean-needle technique and sterile disposable needles I will usually insert 10-20 needles. Most of the needles will be painless, some will cause a very temporary pinch. After the needles are in place I will turn on quiet music, dim the lights, and allow you to relax for thirty minutes. Many patients fall asleep during that time and almost all find it very relaxing.

After the needles are removed will will discuss how frequently you should come back, any diet or lifestyle changes I recommend possibly including the addition of a Chinese herbal formula or supplement.

It is recommended to take it easy for a couple hours after a treatment but normal activities such as eating, walking around, and light activity are appropriate.

When you return for a follow-up treatment we will have a much shorter discussion about how you've been since your last treatment and then do the acupuncture treatment. Follow-up visits last about one hour.

Insurance

Most insurances in Virginia do not cover acupuncture treatments but it's always worth asking. If yours does cover acupuncture we are happy to give you a superbill to submit for reimbursement but we do not bill insurance.
